More Than a Shelter: Honouring the Heart of Animal Services

This Animal Shelter and Rescue Awareness Day, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated staff and volunteers at Winnipeg Animal Services.

Every day, this incredible team goes above and beyond—reuniting lost pets with their families, offering support to rescue groups, and helping residents understand what it means to be a responsible pet owner. When you walk into Animal Services, you’re met with compassion, care, and a commitment to making our city safer and kinder for animals and people alike.

As Acting General Manager Jennifer Harrower shared:

“You won’t find a more knowledgeable, talented, and diverse group of people who absolutely love animals.”

And it’s not just the staff that make this place special—it’s also the dedicated volunteers who give their time, hearts, and energy to animals in need.

“Our volunteers want nothing more than to enrich the lives of animals in our care,” said Community Relations Coordinator Jennifer Medlicott. “They are dedicated to giving back to the city they call home.”

Together, they represent the best of what Winnipeg can be—a compassionate community that supports even its most vulnerable members.
