City of Winnipeg Opens Cooling Sites as Temperatures Soar
As we brace for another wave of high heat in Winnipeg, I want to remind residents that the City is opening up public spaces to help keep everyone safe and hydrated.
Four clean drinking water tanks have been set up and are available to anyone needing a place to refill their bottle:
- 888 Main St. at Stella Ave (near Mount Carmel Clinic)
- 300 Princess St. (near Siloam Mission)
- 364 Furby St. (near Agape Table)
- 190 Disraeli Fwy. (near N’Dinawemak)
In addition to the water tanks, residents are welcome to cool off inside civic facilities like City libraries, leisure centres, and indoor pools during regular hours. These are open to the public and air-conditioned, making them a safe and comfortable place to rest and recharge.
Need a safe place 24/7?
Thanks to a $1 million investment approved in the 2024 Budget, our city has several 24/7 Safe Spaces available, including Velma’s House, West End 24/7, St. Boniface Street Links, and N’Dinawemak. These sites provide shelter, food, support services, and a place to cool down—any time, day or night.
Let’s look out for one another—check in on neighbours, especially seniors or those with health concerns, and follow these heat safety tips:
- Drink water regularly—don’t wait until you’re thirsty
- Limit time in direct sun; wear a hat and loose clothing
- Keep kids and pets out of hot vehicles
- Use portable A/Cs safely and avoid overloading circuits
- Call 911 if someone shows signs of heatstroke or exhaustion
If you’re out in the community and notice someone struggling, say something, do something. These hot days can be especially dangerous for those without a cool place to go.
