A Call for Action: Making Ellice and Erin Safer for Everyone

The corner of Ellice Avenue and Erin Street in Winnipeg\u2019s Daniel McIntyre Ward has seen more than its
fair share of close calls\u2014and unfortunately, some that weren’t just close. I submitted a motion to the
City Centre Community Committee aimed at finally making this busy intersection safer for drivers,
pedestrians, and local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the years, this particular corner has developed a reputation for being dangerous. Residents and
business owners alike have voiced concerns about repeated traffic incidents. Perhaps the most glaring
example: Goodies Bakery, a beloved local spot, has actually had vehicles crash into the building. That\u2019s
not just a safety concern\u2014it\u2019s a public hazard waiting to happen again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite previous requests from the community for improvements, little action has been taken. But I am
pushing for that to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s Being Proposed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
My motion is calling on the City Centre Community Committee to recommend that the Public Works
Committee look into tangible, effective traffic calming measures. These could include:
-Red light and speed cameras to deter reckless driving
-Larger one-way signage for better visibility and awareness
-Physical barriers or boulevards to create a buffer between traffic and pedestrians\u2014and to
protect local businesses like Goodies from further accidents The motion emphasizes a shift from reactive to proactive\u2014a city that doesn\u2019t just respond after the damage is done, but one that anticipates risk and steps up to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No. 7<\/strong> Road Safety on the Corner of Ellice Avenue and Erin Street (Daniel McIntyre Ward) Councillor
Gilroy, Daniel McIntyre Ward, has submitted the following motion to the City Centre Community
Committee for consideration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WHEREA<\/strong>S there has been many traffic incidents over the years on the Corner of Ellice Avenue and Erin
Street; AND WHEREAS<\/strong> Goodies Bakery has had cars that collided with their building;
AND WHEREAS<\/strong> improved safety measures have been requested in the past at this location without any
action;
AND WHEREAS<\/strong> the City should be looking at proactive measures that could help with the safety of this
intersection.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED<\/strong> that the City Centre Community Committee recommends to the Standing
Policy Committee on Public Works that the Winnipeg Public Service be directed to consider traffic
calming measures that include but are not limited to red light and speed cameras, larger one-way<\/p>\n\n\n\n
